Ambitious accountants

Business tips, insights and ideas from Mark Lee

Accountants

2009 will present a number of new challenges for almost all accountancy practices. There will also be new opportunities if you are well placed to exploit and benefit from these. Much will depend on the quality and continuing success of your existing client base as well as on your longer term ambitions for the practice.

Simply stated, if you carry on doing what you’ve always done you will probably be LESS successful than in the past. Why? Because more of your clients will be suffering financially and this will impact on their willingness and ability to pay you and to stay in business. Your fee incomes and profits will fall unless you do things differently.  Mark explored these themes and shared numerous ideas, tips and advice during a series of talks at the end of 2008.  You can now access the slides and notes from these acclaimed talks: Mastering the Credit Crunch – your practice, your advice, your future.

In addition to running the Tax Advice Network and his speaking engagements Mark continues to make time to work with and to provide non-exec strategy advice to a number of firms. He also mentors  and provides business coaching to a handful of accountants each year.

Mark only has time to commit to work with a select number of ambitious  firms and accountants. It really is a matter of ‘first come, first served’.

It won’t surprise those who have heard Mark speak that he avoids open ended exploratory meetings.  And this accords with his advice to accountants about how they run their practices too.  He is quite happy to meet for half an hour though if this would be helpful to assist you in formulating a way forward.

However, what he generally suggests, after an initial telephone conversation  is a half day meeting (normally at or near  to your office).   Mark would ask you a lot of questions and ensure that you  stay focused on the target outcome. That would normally be a short paper that  he would supply within a few days of the meeting and in which he would  summarise and prioritise the key areas for attention and action – what  you need to do and how he could help you.  The fee for this meeting is payable in advance but with a money-back guarantee.
